Skillteq apps: book a tradesperson in minutes

Skillteq, a South African services marketplaceIn production

One iOS and Android app for customers and tradespeople, from request to quote, payment, live job status and reviews.

The challenge

Finding a reliable tradesperson usually means calling around, waiting days for quotes, and paying before the work is done. Tradespeople, for their part, worry about not being paid.

What we built

  • One app for customers and tradespeople; a single account can be both and switch without signing out
  • A four-step request (details, schedule, location, budget) with photos, sent straight to nearby tradespeople who offer that service
  • Itemised quotes (call-out fee, service cost, materials) compared side by side with rating, distance and verification status
  • The deposit is held by the platform and released to the tradesperson's wallet when the customer confirms the job is done
  • Live job status, in-app chat with photos and location, and two-way ratings
  • Tradesperson onboarding, an online and offline switch, a wallet and an earnings dashboard

How it works

The app talks to one backend API. When a customer submits a request, the backend finds tradespeople who offer that service and cover that area, and notifies them by push. Prices come from a rules engine and are fixed onto the quote, so what the customer sees is what they pay. Payments run through Paystack in rand, and funds become withdrawable 48 hours after the customer releases them.

  1. Customer request
  2. Matching
  3. Push to nearby tradespeople
  4. Quotes
  5. Deposit via Paystack
  6. Job done
  7. Tradesperson wallet

By the numbers

  • Live on the App Store and Google Play
  • 29 service categories and about 264 subcategories
  • Funds withdrawable 48 hours after release
